I just read a book called "Every Man A Priest" by Karl H. Hertz. It was published in the 1940's or so. It is a powerful book. Here are some quotations.
"Every Christian is expected to be a prophet. This is a hard fact, usually carefully obscured, neglected, and sometimes denied." --Karl H. Hertz
"I protest against the perversion of the authority of the Christian into a service of the status quo. Where the Christian sees injustice, he must speak out in prophetic protest. To do otherwise is to betray the will of God." --Karl H. Hertz
"The life of faith must be one of faithful obedience. The Christian lives the life of faith at all times, not just in church on Sunday morning." --Karl H. Hertz
"The prophet must witness to what the Spirit compels him to say, humbly and openly, neither in anger against his protagonist, nor with an air of moral superiority." --Karl H. Hertz
"When respectability prevents the members of a church from discharging their responsibility to all segments of society, it assumes an exclusive character not in harmony with justice or love." --Karl H. Hertz
Good stuff, eh?
